A Wall Won’t Work

No wall, fence, or deportation force is going to fix immigration issues in the United States. The political perspective seeks to address either keeping them out (with a wall, fence, or deportation) or streamlining the visa process. While both issues need to be addressed, the systemic issues that create the globalized forces that promote immigration need to be concurrently worked on. Part of the original problems – both concerning food justice – are trade policies and U.S. agricultural policies. These two forces, The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and U.S. Farm Subsidies, combine to create a long-standing economic force pushing jobs south and undocumented immigrants north.
